Date: 12/5/2013 School/Organization: Taylor Elementary Project Leader: Selita Jansen Amount: $600 Description: The tutors/ mentors were not within walking distance of Taylor Elementary. A grant of $600 enabled them to purchase 585 books, and also stipend the cost of fuel. The books were purchased through FirstBook, which is a national non-profit that provides books to low-income neighborhoods, charging only the shipping costs. (85 cents/book)
The gas stipend was used to help cover the costs of the tutors (college students) get 15-20 students to Taylor each day. Each tutor worked with 3 or 4 students. There were about 50 students in the program.
