Thomas Jefferson High School Individual Fund
Thomas Jefferson High School (JHS) has unique aspects to the students’ needs, compared to the elementary and middle schools, which are based on the ages of the students and the social pressures they face. CR netWORK has provided the JHS counselors with an annual $3,000 pre-loaded visa card that can be used to meet these various needs as part of the larger Individual Fund that was established to avoid the lengthy request/vote/approval/disbursal process and provide instant funding for a student in need with a maximum of $250 per student. The counseling staff has found ways to direct donations where they are needed and in such a way as to avoid embarrassing the students. One example of this is with the students who are eligible for the free or reduced lunch program. In many identified cases, the parents are reluctant to sign their children up for this program due to the type of information required on the form or other personal reasons. When the lunch money runs out for these students, a similar situation occurs where the student will not tell anybody and will avoid eating in the cafeteria due to potential embarrassment. The counseling staff has established a way so that they’re notified by someone in the cafeteria that the students’ account is empty and the counselors will then transfer $20 to their lunch account on-line without the knowledge of the student or parents. Someone will then discreetly notify the student that there is money in their lunch account.
