Date: 3/14/2011 School/Organization: Spread Your Wings Project Leader: Don McDill Amount: $1,000 Description: The Spread Your Wings project was formally set up in January, 2010 with a mission of helping to improve self-confidence and develop positive self-worth in foster children through various after-school activities. Other children who may also qualify for this project are: Relative Placement (grandparents who are parenting their grandchildren), and “Suitable Others” (ex: 17 yr old who needs to be in foster care for short period, but DHS denied – another adult to take into home temporarily).
Eligible activities are: • Tutoring • Piano/Music Lessons • Music Instruments • Martial Arts • Art Classes/Camps • Dance Lessons • Gymnastics • Special Olympics • Swimming Lessons • Sports (baseball, soccer, etc This project helped local foster families fund activities for children in foster care and the project is funded entirely on donations. The first grant was received from Proctor and Gamble. Other donors have been: The Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation, Alliant Energy, and other anonymous private donors.
