Date: 1/18/2017 School/Organization: Westside Schools Project Leader: Kara Meiborg and Brian Christoffersen Amount: $5,000 Description: Last year in the ten Cedar Rapids Westside elementary schools nearly 2,000 or 59% of K-5 students qualified for Free/Reduced lunch. These economic difficulties make even something as simple as buying school supplies difficult for families. Additionally, this year Cedar Rapids schools have customized school supply lists for each grade level in all of its elementary schools. While this will simplify the purchase of supplies, the lists are limited in the actual supplies needed for learning activities throughout the school year. This places an ever-growing burden on declining school budgets and many teachers areforced to buy even more supplies from their own pocket for their students. From this project, all ten Westside elementary schools received a donation of supplies they are most in need of for their students based on requests shared from each principal. Distribution to the schools would be based on each school’s enrollment and free/reduced numbers.
